You Know Your Kids Are Growing Up When...

...you have almost as many chocolates ...

...and candy canes on the tree AFTER Christmas!

And even one from LAST year!!

However it didn't look too appealing so it's now in the bin!

So today has been all about packing Christmas away.
Teen Two took all the decorations off the tree....which left me the unenviable task of not only taking the tree out...but the massive clear up....

...of the never ending trail of pine needles...

..all the way through the house....

...to its final resting place!
The dustbin men will kindly take it in a week or so...then there will be one more clear up of dead needles in the forecourt...than that's Christmas done and dusted for another year!

I finally got round to another job which was getting rather overdue... transferring all the important dates from last years calendar to the new one.
This year I am the proud owner of a Family Organiser (courtesy of our £2 challenge)
It should make life a lot easier!

The least pleasant task of the day was taking Teen Two for a vaccine. I hadn't told him until today, and needless to say he wasn't looking forward to it...but having explained what the disease was and the consequences, he was happy to have it.
We had to wait rather a long time in the surgery due to an emergency case coming in, which of course allowed the tension to build up for poor Teen Two.
However, as he was starting to tell the nurse he wasn't ready for it....she had slid the needle in and he was none the wiser!
His face was a picture when we told him it was all over...he hadn't felt a thing!
We are both relieved that is over!

Tomorrow sees both the Teens back at school and college and an opportunity for me to try and catch up on the chaos that has taken over the house!

Home Safe and Dry

The scene outside of our hotel window this morning was rather dreary...rain and more rain....

...but with the prospect of a delicious Hilton breakfast there was little to feel glum about!
The selection is always superb.
I usually go for the fruit/pancakes/waffle option...with maybe some bacon and egg afterwards.
The full English is always the order of the day for the rest of the family, and even Grandma tucked in to a plate of it!

Hubby then took the Teens to the pool, whilst I kept Grandma occupied with a game of Scrabble ( well it is Sunday after all!)

The tree in the reception was a very grand affair...but by this time , there is little pleasure in seeing the festive decorations everywhere, lets get on with the New Year I say!

The driving conditions on the M25 were pretty miserable, but 40 was the lowest we were restricted too, and quite honestly, in conditions like this, who wants to go faster!
We couldn't help thinking again about the poor people up north, once again suffering floods.

Its good to finally be home, out of the miserable weather, with the woodburner warming us up, Milly giving us a warm welcome home, and the time to have a catch up on the lappy.

All that remains for me to do, is say goodbye to the decorations for another year and pray we all are blessed with peace this coming year.

Today's Verse:
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Saturday 2nd Jan: A Silver Wedding Anniversary Celebration

Saturday saw us make an early start to Canterbury for a family get together.
My sister in law and her husband were celebrating their Silver Wedding Anniversary and had booked a lovely restaurant in the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral.
We had an hour to fill before the actual event, and had free access to the grounds and cathedral.
It was a rainy and blowy day so we were glad of the refuge!

Outside the cathedral is probably the biggest nativity scene I have ever seen!

The stained glass windows were beautiful...

...Teen One in particular appreciates their beauty...

...but the main reason for using the opportunity of free access...

...was to bring to life Teen Two's history lesson on Thomas Becket

We always buy an advent candle for the Teens...not for any religious significant, simply a fun way to count down the days...but these are the largest ones we have ever seen!

Something I couldn't help noticing was the lack of any reference to the Bible in the cathedral!
This was the only verse I found...but it must be said we did not see the entire building...but I do like this verse
"A soft answer turneth away wrath"
I don't know the significance in the verse to  this memorial to Henry Coare Kingsford, who I believe was an Admiral in the Royal Navy over a hundred years ago....maybe it sums up the sort of man he was?? No idea...but an excellent verse to live by none the less.

Grandma and Teen Two took the opportunity for a quiet sit down after the walk round... I didn't see the arrow when I took the picture, but it made me smile when I uploaded it...it just needs a caption don't you think!

Before we knew it, it was time for the main event...

...our tables were beautifully decorated with these origami water lilies, painstakingly folded by hubby's niece.
Not only did they have our names on, they also had the meal options we had chosen earlier in the year...which was just as well as most of us had forgotten what we had chosen!

It would seem this wasn't the only thing we had forgotten!
As we entered the event, our nephew handed out "I SPY" sheets, which we were then challenged with ticking off who we could see at the event, who had played a major part in the wedding proceedings all those years ago.
I saw a family member who was well known for her cake decorating skills and said " you made the cake didn't you?"
"No" she replied...."but you did the flowers didn't you?"
"No" I replied!
Neither of us thought too much more about that little conversation and very soon the food started to arrive...

I had a very delicious salmon as did Teen One...

...Hubby and Teen Two went for the pork option...given that pork, fish and vegetarian options are the lowest on hubby's "likes" it wasn't much of a meal choice for him... but he was so hungry he said he almost enjoyed his pork.
I had a taste of it an it was delicious! I personally was spoilt for choice!

Dessert for most of us was treacle tart... which had the lightest butteriest pastry and perfect filling.

After the meal  my sister in law brought back many happy memories of her special day....with the help of the "I SPY" list... imagine my surprise when she turned to me and thanked me for doing the flowers at church and at the reception...and also sorting out a mistake the hotel had made, putting out the wrong colour napkins!
I had no recollection at all!!
THEN...she turned to the cousin, who was on our table and thanked her for the lovely cake she had made!
She too had no recollection and the two of us, masking our embarrassment in front of the whole room, spent the rest of the time wondering how neither of us could remember!

For the evening "do" we were all invited round to their house for a further catch up, viewing slides and photos etc.
It was good to meet up with family we seem to see only at weddings and funerals...and as there haven't been any of them recently....it had been some time since we had seen one or two of them.

We were rather bemused to see two of the visiting children running around in these strange suits!
They can apparently see through the fabric ok, but it was very bizzare.
They are, we were informed...called Morph suits

It was finally time to say goodbye and take a short drive to our hotel for the night.
It was good to start the new year seeing both sides of our family and a reminder that family really is the centre of our lives.

Happy New Year!

Going back to last night...being New Year's Eve, we had some party food to make it a special evening for the Teens.
It still amazes me that simple acts bring such pleasure.
We sat and watched a film then pitted our wits against the University Challenge Celebrities.

It was a cosy evening...lounging in a onesie after a bath..and Millie seemed to enjoy having us back.

I didn't stay up to see the New Year in, but was woken by the fireworks and general noise of the rest of the world celebrating.
It was lovely to wake up this morning and be able to turn over and go back to sleep again!
Eventually, some time around 8.30am I popped in next door, then returned to bed with the lappy and of course a cuppa, ably made by hubby.
A slow start to the day is a rare treat, of which we have had a few these past weeks... but today was probably the last for a while!

Once every one was up and some basic chores out of the way, we sat down for a family game of Monopoly.
We had a lot of fun for a few hours and it is excellent for some basic Maths skills of course for Teen Two.

After a lunch of jacket potatoes with beans and cheese, it was time to see a DVD Teen Two has been itching to see for the past few days!
With the rain lashing down outside, it was lovely to sit in front of the woodburner, forget about the clearing up and just indulge in doing as we please!

I promised you some photos of our presents, and this beautiful crafting bag was made for me by FQ2FF
It is stunning on so many levels...the many pockets, the perfect size for knitting needles, the perfect fabric...woodland creatures and even some toadstools!
And as for the stitching...well..you remember by attempt last week!

Today has been a calm start to the new year and we pray the rest of the year continues the same way. Of course life is not like that, so we pray also for the strength and wisdom to deal with what 2016 sends our way!

"In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths"

Thursday Dec 31: Goodbye Devon and Goodbye 2015

They say all good things come to an end...and today was not only the end of 2015, but the end of our short stay in Devon.
It's always sad to say goodbye to family...but it is always good to be back home.
They also say "there is no place like home" (I can never say that without seeing Dorothy clicking her red shiny heels together!) and for me growing up, nothing could be further than the truth...going home was something I dreaded...so it's very important to me that my Teens enjoying coming, and being home.
I remember mentioning to Teen One some years ago that I used to hate the journey home from being away, when I was younger..."Oh I don't....I love coming home"
I felt I had succeeded in at least one aspect of parenthood that day!

Our route home takes us past Stonehenge....no matter how often we see this mysterious site, we are always fascinated by it and say "look out of the window...Stonehenge is coming up!"

Once home it was of course time to catch up on the washing...why does only two days away seem to amount to a weeks worth!

Tonight will of course see the start of a new year.
I wish you a very happy healthy and blessed 2016

Wednesday 30th Dec: The Presents Continue!

This year a new challenge was set...make a Christmas cracker for a name pulled out of the hat...
my recipient received the traditional paper wrapped one ( sorry!) whereas I received this stunner...made with fabric and tied in the cutest toadstools you ever saw ( I adore toadstools)
Inside I discovered a fine selection of buttons....another one of my passions!
How well my family know me!

As children we often had "spaceships/flying saucers" for dinner...filled with baked beans or tinned spaghetti.
Only one at a time could be made, so it must have been a rather tiresome meal for my mother to prepare...and I can now understand her sighs when we pleaded for them!
Nowadays there is this "new" diablo to make them in....they are more or less the same design...but these days we have the extra pennies to add cheese to the filling...making them super tasty!

The Teens thoroughly enjoyed their unexpected cooked breakfast!

The next part of the present fest is taking a trip to Atlantic Village Outlet Retail Park and buying a present ( or even two!) for £2, again for a family member whose name was pulled out of a hat.
It is amazing what you can buy...and receive(!)for £2.
Why not take on the challenge yourself!
With the introduction of a Poundland it has made it possible to get excellent bargains for just £1 even!

During the year Uncle Phil celebrated his 50th Birthday and we took the opportunity to celebrate this milestone with a party meal.
Teen One was tasked with decorating some cakes....

...as daleks....

...which together with some very yummy banana and peanut butter muffins, were displayed on a fab Dr Who cake stand!

This labour of love was impressively finished off with candles that were more like fireworks!

The evening was finished off with the making of a video, using masks we had to make up ourselves ( thanks for baling me out hubby!)
The family are mad Leicester City fans and this was to celebrate their recent success.
The 15second video took much choreographing and in between the laughing and retakes, we learnt we may not be particularly talented in some areas...but are more than willing to give anything a go!
A happy end to our last day of this short stay down in the West Country with Devon.
What happy memories our Teens will have of these times...and happy memories make for a happy life don't you think?
